Por un periodo extenso ahora, granjas en los Estados Unidos han
disfrutado de una abundancia de trabajadores de México quienes
trabajan por sueldos estables o decrecientes. Sin embargo, desde
el 2008 el número general de estos trabajadores de granja, ambos
los que trabajan en EE.UU. y los que permanecen en México, ha
decrecido sustancialmente. En una investigación reciente
encontramos que este cambio es una consecuencia de cambios
estructurales a largo plazo en el suministro de labor mexicano.
Esto tiene implicaciones amplias no solo para la competitividad
de EE.UU. sino también por la pobreza en México y la parte rural
de EE.UU.
For an extended period now, U.S. farms have enjoyed an abundance
of workers from Mexico who work for stable or decreasing real
wages. However, since 2008 the overall number of these farm
workers, both these working in the U.S. and those who remain in
Mexico, has shrunk substantially.
Around the globe, a growing number of countries are turning to
immigration as a source of farm labor even as agriculture’s share
of employment is falling. Immigrant farmworkers from Mexico are
unquestionably one of the most critical inputs to U.S.
agriculture; their availability affects production technologies
and enhances the ability of U.S. producers to compete with
low-cost producers abroad. Researchers analyze the sustainability
of an agricultural system that depends on foreign sources of
labor, and highlight the importance of labor
productivity-enhancing technological change.
