Melody Hernaiz is a junior majoring in Community and Regional
Development with a minor in Human Right.
She has worked and interned for state assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, a
Latino advocacy group, and community-based and international
non-profits taking an interest in the effects of public policy on
immigrants and social justice initiatives. After graduating this
spring, she hopes to go to law school to pursue her passion of
being an ally and advocate for immigrant rights.
The Undergraduate Public Policy Internship provides an
opportunity for undergraduate students to work closely with
Center for Poverty Research staff to research current state and
federal legislation to help disseminate the Center’s latest
research.
In addition, interns receive training and mentorship to plan and
execute a major outreach project. Previous year’s projects
include Faculty Affiliate videos on poverty, social media
campaigns, a survey of federal legislators and
infographics.
