I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at UC Davis. My research focuses on income inequality and redistributive politics in the United States, the statistics of causal inference, and survey experimentation. My current empirical research looks at the political ramifications of Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) on policy preferences, candidate support and electoral outcomes. I am interested in whether individuals who directly benefit or suffer costs as a result of the new healthcare law mobilize effectively to influence politicians and shape politics.  More generally, I investigate how household income and consumption dynamics affect policy and political preferences in the context of growing income inequality. My previous work examined the relationship between income volatility, or year to year changes in household income, and voter preferences for tax policy, specifically how short-term fluctuations in earnings affect individuals’ support for tax reforms aimed at reducing income inequality, such as tax increases for the wealthy. I develop new methods for designing and analyzing experiments on complex policy issues and use the results from my own survey experiments to help explain trends in public opinion relating to redistributive policies.
