Abramsky discussed his work researching and writing about today’s
poor for his new book The American Way of Poverty: How the
Other Half Still Lives.
Abramsky is a Lecturer in the University Writing Program at UC
Davis. Abramsky has spent 20 years as a journalist, with work
appearing in The Nation, The Atlantic, The
Guardian and others. In 2011, he founded Voices of Poverty,
a web-based project that chronicles hardship in 21st century
America.
In 2014, about 1.3 million U.S. workers age 16 and over earned
exactly the prevailing federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
Another 1.7 million had wages below the federal
minimum. Together these workers make up 4 percent of all
hourly paid workers.
Abramsky is a Lecturer in the University Writing Program at UC
Davis. Much of his work over the past decade has centered on
America’s criminal justice system, and he also writes on
political goings-on and cultural trends.
