Profile

Daphne Penn
Purdue University

Daphne earned her Bachelor of Science in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.  Upon graduating, Daphne began her career as an educator through Teach for America.  Her experience as a Title I elementary school teacher informed her research interests within the substantive areas of education, race, class, gender, and mixed-methods.

Daphne recently earned her Master of Science in Sociology from Purdue University.  For her master’s project, Daphne examined parental attitudes toward integrative school redistricting.  Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, she explored how parental attitudes and responses toward integrative school redistricting (1) differed for parents at different intersections of race and class, (2) had contradictory implications for parents from different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, and (3) influenced policy decisions made by school district officials.

Daphne’s ultimate goal is to conduct policy-relevant research that can effect positive change within education at the micro and macro levels.
