Daniel Ewon Choe Associate Professor, Human Development & Family Studies
Dr. Choe received his doctoral degree in Psychology with a
developmental emphasis from the University of Michigan in 2012.
His research examines the development of self-regulation,
executive functions, and conduct problems throughout childhood,
as well as family stressors, such as harsh parenting and maternal
depression, that contribute to the intergenerational transmission
of antisocial behavior, mental illness, and poverty.
In a recent study, we examined academic skills among children from low-income families. Specifically, we tested whether these skills were predicted by various factors including neighborhood cohesion, positive mother–child engagement, child self-regulation in early childhood, and the Family Check-Up (FCU) intervention. We found that higher positive mother–child engagement and child self-regulation predicted higher academic skills at school entry.
In 2022, Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency(HHSA)
launched the Yolo County Basic Income (YOBI)project and engaged
the UC Davis Center for Regional Change to evaluate the project
via the collection of survey data from YOBI participants. The
YOBI project was designed to address the county’s poverty, which
is ~25%higher than the California rate reported in the 2021
Census.
