Dr. Emerald Nguyen is a Program Official in the Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health. She manages a scientific portfolio that encompasses research on how various population-level factors impact health and wellbeing across the lifespan, particularly during mid- and later-life. She also co-leads the Centers on the Demography and Economics of Aging program. Prior to coming to the National Institutes of Health in 2017, Dr. Nguyen was a Science and Technology Policy Fellow sponsored by the American Sociological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California-Davis.

Dr. Delany Torres is a Program Director in the Division of Behavioral and Social Research (DBSR) at the National Institute of Aging and the National Institutes of Health, where his main role is to manage the Training Portfolio including Institutional Training Grants (T32), Research Education Programs (R25), Individual Fellowships (Fs) and Career Development Awards (Ks). Prior to joining NIA in December 2023, Delany served as Program Director in the Office of Training and Workforce Development at NINDS, and prior to that, was a Scientific Review Officer in the Scientific Review Branch at NINDS. Before joining the extramural world, he was a senior Research Fellow in the Intramural Program at the National Institute of Mental Health. Delany has a bachelor in Biological Science from the University of Havana, a master’s in molecular Neurosciences from the University of Valparaiso in Chile, and a PhD in Cellular Physiology and Biophysics from Leibniz Univerität Hannover in Germany. He came to the US in 2008 to train as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. His research background encompasses ion channels biophysics and system neuroscience. Delany has had a dynamic career of scientific exploration and fostering the career development of early career scientists. His passion lies in empowering the next generation of scientists/clinicians by developing and implementing training programs that bridge gaps and nurture talent from all walks of life while promoting the development of a broad environment in biomedical research.
