Household Food Security in the United States
from the CPS Food Security Supplement

 

The report series Household Food Security in the United States is produced by the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.

This series provides information on food security in U.S. households, how much they spent for food and the extent to which food-insecure households participate in Federal and community food assistance programs.

Data presented in these reports is drawn from the Current Populations Survey’s Food Security Supplement which is conducted annually in December.

Frequency and Timespan: Annual data from 1995 to the present

Geographic Level of Coverage: National with some state data

The U.S.D.A.’s Economic Research Service monitors the extent and severity of food insecurity in U.S. households through a supplement to the Current Population Survey. Responses to a series of 18 questions are used to determine whether a household is food insecure.
