Call for Papers: “Implications of the Affordable Care Act for Low Income Individuals and Families”
The full implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) over the coming years will bring many changes in the level of and process for access to health care among poor and working class Americans. In November 2013, the Center for Poverty Research at the University of California, Davis will host an interdisciplinary conference focusing on research that provides insight and background into likely effects of the ACA on low income individuals and their families. Specific questions of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Will provisions aimed at low-wage workers and small business have disproportionate effects on low-income groups?
- How will changes to Medicaid, including state responses and take-up of Medicaid provisions affect the health safety net?
- How will low-income individuals be affected by health-care exchanges and premium support programs?
- Is the ACA likely to make a substantial difference in access, quality, or types of health care received by poor adults and children?
- Are institutions that serve large numbers of low-income patients, such as county hospitals and health clinics, well-positioned to implement potential expansions?
- How should researchers begin to lay the groundwork for evaluating effects of the ACA as implementation begins?
Accepted papers will be presented at a conference, scheduled for November 1-2, 2013, in Davis, CA. All expenses for presenters will be reimbursed. Each paper presented will be summarized and disseminated to policy-makers and other stakeholders as part of the Center’s policy brief series. Authors will work with the Center’s Senior Writer to prepare these briefs following the conference.
We are interested in including papers from a variety of disciplines, including (but not limited to) public policy, public health, sociology, and economics.
