Communicating your research via the research presentation (also
known as the “academic talk”) is an important part of the
research process that is often overlooked. Distilling pages of
results, tables, and text into a tightly conceived presentation
lasting anywhere from 15-45 minutes takes planning, organization
and, most importantly, practice. This is particularly important
when presenting your research to scholars outside of your own
disciplinary field.
This workshop will provide CRP graduate students and visiting
scholars with an understanding of how to structure, prepare and
deliver academic talks. Though norms for delivering academic
talks across the social sciences differ by disciplinary area,
this workshop will address the fundamentals of all effective
research presentations such as providing a cohesive
structure/road-map, articulating clear research questions,
providing an engaging and compelling rationale for your research
and using PowerPoint effectively. The advice will be useful for
students who will be presenting their work in seminars and
conferences as well as those preparing job talks for the academic
market.
